Negative Effects of Community Vigilante Groups in Nigeria

Community vigilante groups have become increasingly prevalent across Nigeria, particularly in regions where official security forces struggle with capacity or effectiveness. The chart below shows that between 2018 and July 2024, vigilante groups contributed to 348 death casualties, with the majority (79.34%) involving medium-scale incidents (1-4 deaths). High-impact incidents (5 or more deaths) accounted for 13.22%, while 7.44% of cases reported no fatalities, highlighting the varied lethality of vigilante actions.
